

The 2023 Taiwan Lantern Festival is returning to Taipei after 23 years. This display zone includes the master lantern, three auxiliary lanterns, and six themed zones. The Central Display Zone spans the National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (north zone) and Taipei City Hall Square (south zone), and the master lantern is located in the National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall.

“Beauty of Taiwan” Lantern Area
This lantern area uses video to provide breathtakingly beautiful images of Taiwan taken from a variety of angles. It’s also a tribute to the late filmmaker Po-lin Chi, whose award-winning film “Beyond Beauty: Taiwan from Above” both entertained and informed the public. Visitors to this area will not only better appreciate the beauty of Taiwan, but will also cherish more strongly the feeling of home.
※Performance frequency: 18:00-22:00 twice per hour (about 5 minutes each time)

“Zodiac Animals in the Forest” Lantern Area
This lantern area unites the generations through the twelve signs of the Chinese zodiac. Visitors follow the animals through old and new forests while looking back at lanterns since the first Taiwan Lantern Festival 33 years ago.
With this year’s “rabbit” taking the lead, all twelve animals unite in harmony through time, bringing everyone closer together. These displays give the public a chance to experience the bright stories and wonderful memories created by the Taiwan Lantern Festival over the years.












“Innovative Technology” Lantern Area
Do you know what the world of the future will look like?
This lantern area combines technology, science fiction and time travel, providing an imaginative exploration of future possibilities. In addition to looking at daily life, it also has interactive elements that allow the public to participate in exploring the future and opening up creative new possibilities for the years ahead.
※Performance frequency: Weekdays: 1 show. Weekends: 2 shows. (One show followed by an extra performance.)
Each show is 3-5 minutes in length.

“International Friendship” Lantern Area


“International Friendship” Lantern Area(Tourism Bureau, MOTC)
This area’s lanterns create friendship and beauty through international exchange. Contributions come from around the world. Lanterns from Japan include those from Sapporo, Nagoya, Aomori, Ibaraki, Shimane, Kochi, Kagawa, Saga, Hokkaido, the Kintetsu Group, Tobu Railway, Matsuyama, Ehime, Hirosaki, Aomori, Miyagi, Hakodate, Hokkaido, Kasama, Ibaraki, Fukushima, Akita, Takaoka, Toyama, Gujo and Gifu. The area also includes lanterns from Saint Kitts and Nevis; Saint Lucia; Belize; Guam; Daegu, South Korea and Indonesia. At the International Friendship area one can enjoy a banquet of different styles and interpretations.










“Happy Gathering” Lantern Area
Drawing upon popular folktales, this lantern area imaginatively combines cultures to create a joyful venue.
Taipei is Taiwan’s capital and it’s also home to the highest proportion of foreign residents in Taiwan. This lantern area highlights traditional folktales of Taiwan as well as from other cultures around the world. The lanterns create a childlike paradise of celebration and joy, supported by new artificial reality technologies. The White Rabbit of the New Year appears in various lanterns, entertaining visitors from near and far. In this area, the whole family can enjoy the humor and charm of fairy tales.











“Lights of the Lake” Lantern Area
This lantern area highlights water’s beauty and how water and trees nourish life in Taiwan. The interaction of water and trees is also an allegory for the interaction of freedom and cultural diversity in Taiwan. The elements of “water, wood, wind, clouds, light and soil” combine to create a diverse forest ecology. The lights in these works symbolize sunlight supporting a forest, and they also convey the sense of an eternal life and spirit. Leave the city at night and stroll through the tranquility of this lantern forest in the central exhibit area of the National Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall.
